The word comes from a Malay word meaning 'to tie'. The yarn are being tied or bound first, as a form of resist, in the desired design and then dyed before being woven into textile. Hence the frayed look in the motifs typical of ikat fabric.

In 'tiang langgai uwi' motif. Uwi, or rattan, was used to bind the structural pillars of the traditional Betang house of the Dayaks in West Kalimantan. Hence symbolising strength and stability.

Uwi is also used to make bracelets and rings which act as amulet to ward off bad luck and illnesses. Once healed the rattan amulets would be burned or released into the river as a symbolic act of casting the bad luck and misfortune away.

**pictures are very close representation of the colours but not 100% due to different light conditions and viewing screens.
