The yarn are being tied or bound first, as a form of resist, in the desired design and then dyed before being woven into textile. Hence the frayed look in the motifs typical of ikat fabric.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe word Sekomandi is made up of two words, 'Seko' which means brotherhood or family kinship and 'Mandi means strong or close. Hence Sekomandi can be interpreted as \"strong family bond\", represented by the classic ancient Toraja pattern of interlocking motifs, sometimes interpreted as a genealogical pattern: the hooked arms and legs of the rhomboid human form.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe textile is regarded as sacred for use in elaborate ceremonies and rituals to honour the dead. It is also a high value medium of exchange.
