▪︎ABOUT

Kemben, the breastcloth, were worn by Javanese women, mainly before the arrival of Islam. It was commonly worn during the Majapahit era until the Mataram sultanate.

It was made with a tool called tjanting. Every dots and lines were hand drawn in wax individually and then dyed, boiled, rewaxed, and the process was repeated , depending on the complexities of the design.

The region of Banyumas ceased its batik production in the 70s. Although productions has started again in recent years, this classic design with its band of red colour and beautiful sogan and indigo on cream background remain popular and very much sought after by the locals.
