This striking cushion is made from Baule cloth wrapper. The African cloth is also known as a 'wrapper' as it was wrapped around the body and also used as carrier for everyday items.

The Baule are an Akan people and one of the largest tribe in Ivory Coast, Western Africa, who historically migrated from Ghana. They are traditionally farmers who live in the centre of Ivory Coast.
The word ikat comes from a Malay word meaning to tie. The yarn are being tied or bound first, as a form of resist, in the desired pattern and design and then dyed before being woven into textile. Hence the frayed look in the motifs typical of ikat fabric.
The wrapper consists of several handwoven narrow strips, and then sewn together to form a bigger single piece.
It is normal for bands of coloured floats to be incorporated. These were added during the weaving process.
