▪︎ABOUT
The word ikat comes from a Malay word meaning to tie. The yarn are being tied or bound first, as a f.morm of resist, in the desired pattern  and then dyed before being woven into textile. Hence the frayed look in the motifs typical of ikat fabric.

Notice the beautiful intricate details of indigo touches amongst the narrow ikat stripes!

This piece was woven by the tribe of Lamaholot from the town of Larantuka, on eastern end of Flores. It is very rare for this type of ikat to come into the market. Three generations have had their hands in weaving this sarong from spinning, to dying the cotton to weaving. It will then be offered as part of the marriage gift exchange.

Woven in two separate sections and then sewn together to form a bigger piece. With shells embellishment on front and back.

In kolo matang ( bird eye ) motif.
