▪︎ABOUT
Mega Mendung, meaning cloudy or overcast sky, is the most famous, iconic Cirebon batik motif and has its origin from the arrival of the Chinese in the region. In Taoism the shape of clouds symbolize the upper world, freedom, a symbol of fertility and the giver of life.
This motif is unique to Cirebon and is a masterpiece of the region. It has been registered with Unesco by Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in order to gain recognition as a world heritage.
The gradation effect is achieved through waxing and dipping about seven to ten times, with some pieces having more layers.
This piece is with the naga (dragon) going through the clouds. The dragon is also from Chinese influence symbolising greatness, wealth, power and cosmic balance.
